About Kevin

My name is Kevin Mejicanos; I have worked as a Physical Education teacher for almost 12 years. Being raised in a richly diverse and multicultural city like Chicago I have had many opportunities to learn about a variety of cultures.
My fascination with maps, languages, and different cuisines has been a lifelong passion. I spent my formative years in the Northwest side of Chicago, an area characterized by a predominantly Polish and Italian population. This exposure to diversity ignited my curiosity about various cultures and instilled in me a deep desire to explore the world. With Hispanic roots, I frequently journeyed to Guatemala to visit my grandparents and a large portion of my extended family residing there. As I matured, I seized every opportunity to venture across the globe, exploring multiple countries.
During my university studies, I had the transformative experience of immersing myself in Italian culture through the DePaul University study abroad program. Although I had traveled before, this was the first time I had the privilege to live in a society different from my own. I swiftly fell in love with the food, atmosphere, and traditions. At the conclusion of that enriching journey, I made a pledge to myself: "How wonderful it would be to continue learning about different cultures while pursuing my greatest passion - teaching people how to lead healthy lives."
Teaching Physical Education has proven to be exceptionally rewarding and enjoyable. Over my six years of teaching in Chicago, I worked within diverse communities, educating students from various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. This experience honed my skill in tailoring instruction to the unique needs of my students, making it a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy.
Over the course of my international teaching journey, I have encountered both challenges and incredible rewards. During my first four years of international teaching, I faced and conquered numerous hurdles while wholeheartedly embracing the IB teaching philosophy within the Primary Years Programme (PYP). This experience has continually sharpened my skills in instructing students hailing from diverse cultural backgrounds. In this dynamic environment, I skillfully crafted and executed transdisciplinary units that encompassed a wide array of essential elements. These units encompassed wellness management, sports proficiency, manipulative skills, fine and gross motor development, spatial awareness, and the foundation of social skills.
At present, my role involves teaching Physical Education and Health at the Middle School level. Drawing upon the wealth of knowledge accumulated from my previous experiences, I have consistently witnessed remarkable growth and development in my students. They have not only exhibited qualities such as open-mindedness, collaboration, and respect but have also embraced safe and principled behavior. Importantly, they have found joy in the process and are well on their way to becoming lifelong enthusiasts of fitness. For me, this journey has been the most fulfilling and rewarding aspect of my career.
Beyond the classroom, I practice what I preach when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. Cooking is one of my passions, and I relish the thought of exploring the culinary treasures of different cultures while aligning them with my health-conscious lifestyle. Hiking, biking, running, swimming, and yoga are also among my hobbies. I've participated in numerous organized races and competitions in these disciplines.

I hope this glimpse into my life as both an educator and an individual provides you with valuable insight.
